Talisman of El by Alecia Stone

One Planet.

Two Worlds.

Population: Human ... 7 billion.
Others ... unknown.

When 14-year-old Charlie Blake wakes up sweating and gasping for air in the middle of the night, he knows it is happening again. This time he witnesses a brutal murder. He's afraid to tell anyone. No one would believe him ... because it was a dream. Just like the one he had four years ago - the day before his dad died.

Charlie doesn't know why this is happening. He would give anything to have an ordinary life. The problem: he doesn't belong in the world he knows as home.

He belongs with the others.
My thoughts: This was a very interesting book of mythical beings with a new perspective. Alicia Stone has created a unique world where an orphan boy finds himself the answer to earth's salvation.

I really enjoyed the concept behind this book. The thought that there's another world at the center of the earth has been done before but Stone brings it with a new twist. The story began with Charlie starting a new life with his new foster dad and meets two other kids who become a big importance to his life. Charlie was no ordinary kid though and the secret behind him was very intriguing. Though I do have to admit that there were many parts that dragged for me and there were parts were I was confused with the sudden shift of time. Other than that, I really enjoyed reading the twists of the story and I like the mythical beings/creatures that were introduced.

The characters were great. Charlie was a wonderful character that many young middle schoolers could identify with. He was lost and unsure of himself. He was also different from others which made him feel like he didn't belong. Charlie proved himself though as a great friend and as a very brave boy. Then there was Alex who befriended Charlie right away on his first day of school. She was strong and independent. I especially enjoyed the physical description of her because she sounded like a regular girl instead of a girl with extreme beauty. Next, there was Richmond. Richmond was a hilarious character. He was younger than Charlie and Alex. Even though he too was an orphan, this fact did not bring him down. He appeared to be very optimistic. Finally, there was Derkein. First of all, what a unique name. I loved it! I also loved how he became an amazing father figure for the three children. The characters were great!

In all, this was a great story with an interesting take on mythical creatures (I would say more but I don't want to give away the surprise). I liked the characters and I liked the twists in the plot. Though it was slow in many parts, it was still a very good story. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure and fantasy; I especially recommend it to middle schoolers. I give it:
