Friday Hops, 6/21/13

This hop is hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Every week participants answer a question and then visit other blogs participating. The purpose of the hop is to give bloggers the chance to meet new bloggers, get to know one another better, and get new followers. This week's question is:

When you are writing your reviews, do you write them as you are reading or wait until you are completely done with the book?

A: I write my reviews after I finish reading a book. To me, a review of a book should have the reviewer's overall feeling towards the book and that only happens after reading the whole thing. For example, my feelings could have changed towards the end of a book, which could affect my review on it.

There have been rare occasions where I was pressed for time to get my review out because of a blog tour, so I've found myself writing a review before finishing the book. What I did in these instances was that I would start writing the review, then I would skim the last few pages that were left of the book, and read the last five to ten pages of the book to get the gist of it to write the rest of the review. I don't like doing this, so I make sure to give myself plenty of time to read the books.

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader and The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice.

The beginning: "He ran."

Page 56: "A bright spot appeared from beneath the refrigerator. It scurried out to the middle of the floor and paused. He crouched to look at it.

"It was his mutant cockroach again, the one with the extra leg. It had gotten bigger."

My Thoughts: This was chosen as a book of the month in my Bibliophile group over at Shelfari and I was hesitant at first to purchase it because I'm not a huge sci-fi fan. I purchased it after reading the beginning of the book. It completely hooked me in. Now, I'm wondering what is up with roaches in this apartment building.

  1. You have an interesting answer about how you write your reviews. I always write as I am reading and then add things to delete thoughts.

Stop by for my full answer if you like.

    Happy Hopping!!

  4. Oh! 14 sounds so creepy! :) With blog tours, if I haven't finished yet, I do a book spotlight and post the review a bit later. I try not to do many tour because I really want a chance to read the book and get the review out in time :)

  5. This sounds like a good one. I like the shot beginning and the thought of mutant cockroaches makes my skin crawl, but I think I'd probably enjoy this one. Here is my Friday post.

  7. I love your response to the question this week. You said everything I wanted to, but didn't :) My feelings about a book resemble a roller coaster as I'm reading it. One minute I love, the next I'm rolling my eyes and not liking it. My review would be all over the place if I wrote as I went!

You're not the only one who has skimmed the last couple of pages for a book you had to review for a tour! I've done that, too. I hate to admit it, but, 'tis true. In cases like that, I usually focus my reviews on the parts I have read and don't touch too much on the ending.

Thanks for stopping my blog! Following you now! :)

  8. Hey, Vonnie!

You know, I've found myself in the very same situation you mention -- having to write a review for a tour, and with an unfinished book on my hands. And I've done the very same thing you have. So I can definitely relate! I also agree that this is not the best thing to do, but, in my case, sometimes it's necessary, since I do have two jobs that take up too much of my free time....

I think I'm going to start doing what you recommended to me in the comment you left on my BBH post -- take notes. Great idea!

As for the book "14" that you quote here, I must be honest and say that I won't be reading it. I DETEST these bugs!! That's why I had to stop reading Kafka's "The Metamorphosis", by the way....

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving such a great comment on my BBH post!! :)
