Friday Hops, 8/15/13

This hop is hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Every week bloggers answer a question and then visit other blogs that are participating.  This week's question is:

Were you a born bookworm or somebody got you into the habit of reading?

A: Ooh that's a great question...

My first language was Spanish but I was not taught to read or write it. When I came to the U.S. at age four, I was sent to schools that taught English but in Spanish (if that makes sense). I did not become fluent in English until the age of eight. I struggled with reading because I was a very confused child who kept battling between two languages.

I was not read to as a child, other than what teachers read in class. My mother would tell me oral stories instead because of her lack of English reading skills and not having the resources to buy me a book. I loved listening to stories but I did not read them because my skills were very low. This frustrated me because I really wanted to be able to read the wonderful books with the pretty pictures.

It wasn't until I was eleven that I stumbled upon a Fear Street book by R.L. Stine that everything changed. I was able to read it AND comprehend it. I became addicted to this series. As my reading improved, my love for reading increased. Now, I can't stop reading.

Book Beginnings on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader and The Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice.

The Sojourn by Rupansh Gupta

The beginning: "Why are we born? What is the universe? What is time? What is the reason behind everything?"

Page 56: "When you go far above in the sky
and over the clouds you fly,
you see the earth in a new perspective,
and you come to know its splendor is so much subjective"

This book is a collection of poems that the publisher is kind enough to give out 25 ebook copies! Just fill in the form below. You can also view my post for the synopsis of the book and read the author interview.

  5. You sure overcome some early difficulties - well done to you. Thanks for mentioning R. L Stine, have heaps of them in my classroom and I think I know one of my readers who might be able to read them. Must try her on them.

  8. Oh, I'm so glad you finally overcame all those difficulties! I started out reading in Spanish, too, and later started reading in English when my family arrived in the U.S.

Interesting that you really got going with R.L. Stine....and you're a very brave girl, too!

Your choice for The Friday 56 and Book Beginnings sure looks fascinating!! I love to read books with this type of subject matter! I wonder if this book is available in print, though....You know me -- NO e-books. Lol.

Thanks for sharing your interesting story!! : )
