Children's Book: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

Life with his little brother, two-year-old Fudge, makes Peter Hatcher feel like a fourth grade nothing. Fudge is actually a tiny terror in disguise, causing mischief everywhere he goes. Whether Fudge is throwing a temper tantrum in a shoe store, smearing mashed potatoes on the walls at Hamburger Heaven, or trying to fly, he’s never far from trouble. He’s an almost three-year-old terror who gets away with everything, and Peter’s had it up to here!

When Fudge walks off with Dribble, Peter’s pet turtle, it’s the last straw. Peter has put up with Fudge for too long. Way too long! How can he get his parents to pay attention to him for a change?

My Thoughts: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is a funny story of sibling rivalry that children and adults will enjoy time and time again. Set in New York City in the 1970s, nine-year-old Peter Warren Hatcher has to tolerate the misery that is caused by his two-in-a-half-year-old brother, Farley Drexel Hatcher, who is known as “Fudge.” His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher, give all the attention to Fudge making Peter feel that he is no longer appreciated.

The characters are easy to love in this realistic world. One can't help but feel sorry for Peter when he has a spoiled little brother who does crazy things. As much as Fudge gets on Peter's nerves, Peter can't help but be a wonderful big brother to the little boy. Peter actually does everything possible to get Fudge calm and obedient. He is able to do so by being a good model. Then there's Fudge. Fudge is quite quirky. He sure likes to get himself into tough situations. However, his little antics is what makes this book a fun read.

Though this story is set in the 1970s, it is still relatable to children today. Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing is a great book to read with fourth graders, or other young readers. Children will become hooked to Fudge’s antics and be able to sympathize with Peter. The book also teaches children about problem solving as well as patience and understanding. They will have fun reading this book because it told is a light and humorous manner. I rate this book:
