Book Blogger Hop: May 10th -16th
This hop is hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Every week participants answer a question and then visit other blogs participating. The purpose of the hop is to give bloggers the chance to meet new bloggers, get to know one another better, and get new followers. This week's question is:
What was the
last book you re-read? Or name a book you would like to re-read.
A: I don't really re-read books because I have so many books waiting for me. The last book I re-read though was The Great Gatsby but I listened to the audio instead. I'm preparing myself for the movie that is coming out.
But...I do have a few books that I would love to re-read: The whole Harry Potter series, the Hathaway series by Lisa Kleypas, Unwind by Neal Shusterman, The Graveyard Queen series by Amanda Stevens, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, etc... Now, if only I could find the time to do so.
I am trying The Friday 56 meme hosted by Freda's Voice for the first time :)

Becoming Americana by Lara Rios
Becoming Americana by Lara Rios
I'm taking my time with this one. It has a lot of great quotes. I am finding myself taking a lot of notes and putting Post-its.
Sounds like a girl-power read! Strong cover too.

My Blog Hop Answer
Hey, Vonnie!
ReplyDeleteYou know, "The Great Gatsby" is one of the books I've been meaning to read for a long time, and just never have. I really need to read more classics! And I want to re-read the Harry Potter series, too, in spite of my problem with book 6. Maybe this time I would finish it! Lol. "Outlander" is another book I want to read, for the first time. Would you believe I've owned it for several years now, and have never read it?
"Becoming Americana" -- what a great title! I'm going to find out more about this book. All of us who were born in other countries, but were brought up in the U.S., have had to struggle to find our own unique identities. Are we Americans or Mexicans? Americans or Cubans? Americans or (insert country)? Yes, we're an interesting combination of each, yet sometimes we feel pulled in different directions, especially when cultural values conflict with each other. It's especially important for us Latinas to find our own power, because we come from heavily 'machista' cultures. So I'm rushing over to Goodreads to get more information on this one, and add it to my TBR shelf!!
Thanks for visiting my BBH post, and leaving such an interesting comment!! :)
"Becoming Americana" is actually a sequel. The first book is called "Becoming Latina in 10 Easy Steps" and it's one of my favorite books of all time. I completely connected with it. Lara Rios brings out the question of what does it mean to be Latina in the U.S. How can you embrace your culture are you try assimilate into the American one? What exactly do you need to do/believe in to be considered Latina?
Delete"Becoming Americana" is the opposite just like you mentioned above. It still brings interesting issues out. I'm not as in love with this book as I am with the first one but it's still a really awesome read.
Yes, both books are not perfect. There are a lot stereotypes and things that Lara Rios got wrong, but these could be easily over looked. But I just love how the books make me question my identity and others'.
Maria, you should definitely check these out :)
Both of these books are now on my TBR shelf at Goodreads. I need to read more humorous books, and these look like a great place to start!
ReplyDeleteIn my particular case, I went through a stage -- when I was in college -- in which I wanted to come across as totally American. So I would ask people to call me "Angie". I got this from my complete first name -- Maria de los Angeles. The funny thing is that my maiden name was Perez. So I became "Angie Perez"! Lol.
When I became an American citizen, I was asked if I wanted to change my first name to simply "Maria". I said, "Absolutely not!". Although I don't really use it on documents, it's still my name, and I bear it very proudly. So, when I get a new paperback, I print my complete name on it, along with the year I bought it. I paste a bookplate inside my hardback purchases. In both cases, I use my full name, which now is "Maria de los Angeles Behar". My husband, Daniel, is also from Cuba, but he left the country when he was 2, and grew up in New York. He definitely considers himself completely American, although he does speak (to some extent) and understand Spanish.
Some time ago, I read an AWESOME book by a Cuban writer, Daina Chaviano. The book is titled "La Isla de los Amores Infinitos". I devoured the book! Later on, I got the English translation -- "The Island of Eternal Love", which she brought out later on. I want to read it, but I know that the flavor of the Cuban culture won't be quite the same...
I think I have La Isla de los Amores Infinitos. I have to search through my mountainous piles of books to find it. I haven't read it though but I hope so soon.
DeleteSo, Maria de los Angeles...Wow! How Latino can you get? lol Luckily, I was only given one name but I was baptized with two last names. It's a hassle though because here in the U.S. my last name (my father's) is seen as my middle name while my mother's maiden name is seen as my last name. There's always a confusion when signing papers for HR or when I'm trying to do my taxes.
i just finished the great gatsby precisely because the movie is coming out!
ReplyDeleteand what a great title "becoming americana"! and amen to "it's my responsibility not to fail myself" -- sounds like she kicks ass! :)
I'm about the same way. My TBR pile is getting too big.
