My Thoughts: I am not a huge comic book or graphic novels fan. However, when I heard that there was a lesbian Latina solo comic series, I knew I had to try it. Knowing that this genre was out of my comfort zone, I dove into it with an open mind. This comic of America has the first six comic issues.
The art style was very pretty, especially the first few issues. The colors and the characters were done very well. I found myself awing at the artwork after reading each bubble. In the last few issues, though, the art style changed because it had a different artist. The art wasn't too bad but it was different. The characters looked weird that it wasn't too pleasant at times, but the scenery was well drawn.
The character of America grew on me. I didn't know her from the Young Avengers, but in the comic series she annoyed me at first. Her hardheadedness and her quick to act stunts were frustrating. She always tried to put up the front of being a "bad ass" and her answer to everything was to punch. However, as the series continued, her character began to developed more. We come to understand why she has to put up a front to others and we learn that she was eager to be loved. I began to sympathize with her that it made me a little sad that the comic series ended.
As a whole, the series was decent. It needs a lot of work because the plot and character felt choppy. However, I feel that the series became stronger with every issue so I know it will get better. I rate this collection:
