Blog Tour Review: Captured Lies by Maggie Thom

Book #1 The Caspian Wine Series

Suspense/Thriller

Date Published: October 2012

Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story... but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

But can she do it in time...

My Thoughts: Lies, kidnapping, and secrets: all elements that created this story. This was an exciting read right from page one. I was quite surprised in realizing how much I liked this book.

This story started off with a bang and it continued to deliver to the end. My attention was completely captured when reading the first chapter: kidnapping from the hospital and turmoil in an airplane. It had me constantly wondering what was going on and had me trying to figure out the importance of Bailey in the story. It was fascinating to read how there were sudden twists that had me at the edge of my seat.

The main characters Bailey and Guy were believable. They did not appeared to be too gran or absurd to me. In fact, their faults were what made their characters enjoyable to read. Bailey was the lost girl who was raised to be always on her guard. Her fears and the inability to trust others enough to have true friends were relatable. Next, there was Guy who was trying to solve the mystery of the kidnapped child. I liked how devoted he was to his step-grandmother yet at the same time he was torn in whether or not he should protect Bailey. The rest of the characters were great too but would have liked to have read more about them.

As a whole this was a thrilling read. I do admit that the many errors throughout the story kind of got to me, but I was still able to get past these and enjoy it. I would be in the look out for more of Maggie Thom's books. I rate it:
