Mini Reviews: All things yellow

Here are two small reviews of two books that happen to have yellow covers:

The Chicken Sisters by KJ Dell'Antonia
(This is a TBR book)

This was a tale of two restaurant rivalries that began with one family. I enjoyed reading how the restaurants evolved, learning the truth behind the rivalries, how the Food Network was involved, and learning about the behind the scenes of food shows. This story centered around two sisters that have grown apart and could not get along. Their sibling rivalry was realistic but yet at times annoying. If only they swallowed their pride and talked to each other! Things would have worked out way differently! Though the ending was pretty abrupt, it was still a good ending to bring the sisters together. I rate this book: 3 stars.

A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord

Narrated by Maria Cabezas

This was a sweet middle school age book about a young girl who was trying to save money for her blind dog's operation. Lily painted bee houses and sold them to earn the money. At a close call, Lily met Salma, a Latina farm worker. Salma ended up teaching Lily so many things, such as farm workers were real people. For a middle school book, I enjoyed how the topic of farm workers was treated. It brought the issues to light without being political. I also enjoyed hearing about the blossoming friendship between the girls and their determination to cure Lily's dog. I rate it: 3.5 stars.

  1. Abrupt endings are so jarring; I have definitely knocked off a star here and there for endings that are especially abrupt - particularly when it is a stand-alone book and not all of the problems are resolved!

    1. Exactly! The book built up all of this drama and it just ended. I get why the author did it the way it did so it appeared more like a TV tapping, but jeesh, talk about an easy resolution!

    2. Those are especially no fun when you're invested in the story. It makes sense with what the author was trying to do but even so...
