Blog Tour Review: Batter Up by Roby Neeley

Contemporary Romance
Released date: August, 1st, 2014
Escape Publishing
She mixes more than flour and sugar into her cake batter, and he’s about to find out if a little bit of magic is to his taste...

Bakeshop owner Emma Stevens has a secret — a delicious, slightly unorthodox secret. Each Monday, she mixes up a premonition to share with the bachelors of Buttermilk Falls, and sets one lucky man on the path to true love.

When reporter Jason Levine finds himself mixed up in a Las Vegas bachelorette party, he hears the strangest rumour: the marriage is happening thanks to magic cake batter. Seriously sceptical, and sick of frauds, Jason journeys to the backwater town of Buttermilk Falls to expose the baker and release the townspeople from her evil clutches.

But when Jason meets Emma, tempers flare and sparks fly. Will Jason cling to his logic at the expense of a future, or will he let himself fall under Emma’s spell?

My Thoughts: Can you create magic with baking a few cakes? When I started reading this book, I was immediately reminded of my beloved favorite, Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, and the movie Simply Irresistible. I knew immediately that this book was the right book for me since it had all the magical elements with touches of romance that I absolutely adore.

I very much loved the concept of Batter Up. I was delighted to read how one could create magic just by baking cakes on Mondays. The fact that the magic seemed to work only on men was very intriguing. I wanted to know more why the magic worked this way. The magical elements in this book was what really caught my attention and made me devour this book. It was quirky and simply a feel-good type of read.

The characters were also great. I found myself loving Emma and Jason. Emma was a very caring person who enjoyed bringing couples together through her special cakes. Jason was a funny Miami reporter who went out to research the magic behind Emma's baking. It was obvious that these two would get together right away, but I found myself having absolute fun reading how everything happened.

The only downside that I found with this book was how it quickly wrapped everything up. The ending felt too rushed. I would have liked for the events at the last third of the book to be expanded more. It would have been nice to have read a proper goodbye with these cherished characters.

To sum up, this was a very fun and cute read. I love magical realism in books and this one definitely had it. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys some adorable reads. I rate it:

About Robyn Neeley

Robyn Neeley had never thought of herself as a writer, but one day on the DC Metro, she pulled out her notebook and scratched what became the prologue to her debut novel. Two years and nine months (and nineteen days) later, she signed her first contract. She writes sweet romance with a lot of sass and full of heart. And yes, there’s a little spice mixed in because when you find the love of your life, you have to do something!

She loves to travel, watches way more reality TV than she cares to admit, can’t live without Dunkin Donuts coffee and has never met a Christmas cookie that she didn’t like. She has the best fury four legged roommate but promises to only post one or two pictures on her blog of her feline!

She’s currently writing her fourth book and always looking for inspiration to write faster. If you have an amazing Christmas cookie recipe or the magic secret to writing 3,000 words a day, she wants to hear it!
