This hop is hosted by Billy over at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Every week participants answer a question and then visit other blogs participating. The purpose of the hop is to give bloggers the chance to meet new bloggers, get to know one another better, and get new followers. This week's question is:
So would you read a book just because of the hype?
A: Sometimes. I am sometimes influenced into buying/reading books because the movie is coming out. To me, if the movie looks interesting, then the book must be better. I did this with Beautiful Creatures. I saw the trailer of the movie and I was intrigued with the imagery that it portrayed, thus I bought the book (I read the book but haven't seen the movie yet).
However, sometimes the hype makes me not want to buy or read a book. When I really look at the reviews and see what the negative ones are really saying, I then decide that the book is not for me. For example, as much as I enjoy reading erotica (if it's written well of course), I refuse to read Fifty Shades of Grey. The reviews have pointed out that the writing is not good and the male's character is not very charming. Should I let the minor negative reviews influence my decision to read a book? Probably not, but there are so many books out there that I want to read that I have to be picky. Besides, that's what reviews are for: to help influence the reader.

ARC: Hearts in Exile by Mysti Parker
The beginning: "Please, take me home."
Page 56: " 'That's too bad,' I said, and was about to find something else to occupy my attention when Loralee touched the butterfly's broken wing with one hand on the ground beneath her. Eyes closed, her mouth moved silently. A brief glow covered the insect, she withdrew her finger, and the butterfly fluttered both wings. It took flight a second later."
My Thoughts: Reading the first line made me wonder what was happening with the main character. Why isn't she at home? Why is she asking to go back there? Did something bad happened to her? The following paragraphs further explain, yet are still vague, as to why the main character said those words.
I am reading this book for review, which I hope to have up no later than Sunday. So, come back to check out my thoughts on this book.
Hi Vonnie, I have heard a lot about you from other bloggers. Thanks for commenting and following- I am following you back! :] Speaking of Beautiful Creatures, I just saw the movie, but haven't had the chance to read it yet. If the book is any good I would love to read your review.

p.s. I keep thinking your blog says Vronnie, and confuse it with my own. XD

DeleteThanks for stopping by :)
This sounds like an interesting paranormal novel. I am always curious to know how the characters use their powers.
ReplyDeleteThat 56 is definitely grabbing my attention!!
ReplyDeleteLove the Friday 56!
ReplyDeleteHere is my post
I think that a book being made into a movie would be a powerful factor in convincing anyone to buy and/or read a book. However, no amount of hype will ever convince me to read e-books, for instance. As for erotica, I avoid it entirely. "Fifty Shades of Grey" contains bondage, as well as VERY graphic sex, so it's definitely NOT for me!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your selection for The Friday 56!! I looked it up on Goodreads (it's not on Amazon yet), and think the plot is GREAT. So I'm adding it to my GR "want to read" bookshelves!
Thanks for your Friday hop posts! Happy Reading!!:)
The opening is intriguing and raises lots of questions, as you noted. And then page 56 adds more interest. Hope you're enjoying the book.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog.
Sounds really intriguing...and the book has a great cover! Thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteI have a knee-jerk reaction to avoid hyped books. I often get around to reading them -- and even enjoying them -- but it often takes me a few years.
ReplyDeleteThanks for playing along with Book Beginnings on Fridays!

Great answer Vonnie. Your right, there are just too many fantastic books out there so why bother wasting time with one that has many negative reviews.

Have a great week!
Thanks for stopping by! I like your answer as well.. I forgot all about the movie hype influcing the book hype!
ReplyDeleteSometimes a hype does make me want to read a book, but I'm one of those pessimistic people where the book rarely lives up to the hype! I love the BB, it's so simple and yet strong at the same time! Thanks for stopping by, I'm still in love with your background!
