I saw this weekly feature over at All the Book Blog Names Are Taken and I figured, why not?
Books from the Backlog is hosted by Carol's Random Life in Books. It is a fun way to feature some of those neglected books sitting on your bookshelf unread. If you are anything like me, you might be surprised by some of the unread books hiding in your stacks.
Yellow Moon by Jewell Parker Rhodes
In the second part of the New Orleans trilogy that began with "Voodoo Season," Rhodes takes on an ancient African vampire in today's Big Easy, where thrilling chills await. Now in paperback. When Marie Levant, the great-great granddaughter of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, sleeps, she dreams of rising waters. She knows better than anyone about New Orleans' brutal past, its legacy of slavery, poverty, racism, and sexism. As a doctor at Charity Hospital's ER, she treats its current victims. But she cannot cure her own terrifying dreams. When a jazzman, a wharf worker, and a prostitute all turn up murdered, their blood drained, Marie sees their ghosts and embarks on an adventure to uncover their dark connection. Meanwhile, in her dreams, the waters around New Orleans are rising and the yellow moon warns of an ancient evil, an African vampire called wazimamoto, intent on destroying Marie and all the Laveau descendants. Summoning her ancestral powers, Marie fights to protect her daughter, lover, and herself from the wazimamoto's seductive assault on both body and spirit. Echoing with the heartache and triumph of the African- American experience and the horrors of racial oppression, Yellow Moon gives readers an unforgettable heroine in the sexy, vulnerable, and mysterious Marie Levant, while it powerfully evokes a city on the brink of catastrophe.
Why I added it to my bookshelf?
This book was given to me by the author about 12 years ago when I used to participate on a site called, Shelfari (boy..I sure miss it!). I was not book blogging yet and I barely started participating in Shelfari (it was a cooler version of Goodreads). Jewell Parker Rhodes messaged me one day offering to send me her book. Of course, I could not turn it down. It was a free book!
Sadly, I have not read it and I always wondered why. Now I know. It's a continuation from another book. I know myself. I have to read my books in order.
Oh wow, it does sound good, but I totally get wanting to get them all in order. I miss Shelfari.
ReplyDeleteGlad to meet others that remember Shelfari!
DeleteWow, I had forgotten about Shelfari until you mentioned it! I hope you enjoy the book, and thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
DeleteI LOVE her books! So far I have read Ghost Boy, Towers Falling, and Ninth Ward. I will have to see if my library has this trilogy!
ReplyDeleteGood to know that someone has heard of this author and has enjoyed her. I will have to check her other books.
DeleteI actually just posted a 'review bomb' of her books I have read so far. I read Sugar this weekend and did not like it as well as the three I mentioned above, but I still would recommend it to others. Ghost Boys was so powerful, I was in tears.
DeleteI guess not every book could be a winner.
