Review: Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor by Lisa Kleypas

Synopsis:
ONE LITTLE GIRL NEEDS A FAMILY
One rain-slicked night, six-year-old Holly lost the only parent she knew, her beloved mother Victoria. And since that night, she has never again spoken a word.

ONE SINGLE MAN NEEDS A WIFE
The last thing Mark Nolan needs is a six-year-old girl in his life. But he soon realizes that he will do everything he can to make her life whole again. His sister’s will gives him the instructions: There’s no other choice but you. Just start by loving her. The rest will follow.

SOMETIMES, IT TAKES A LITTLE MAGIC…
Maggie Collins doesn’t dare believe in love again, after losing her husband of one year. But she does believe in the magic of imagination. As the owner of a toy shop, she lives what she loves. And when she meets Holly Nolan, she sees a little girl in desperate need of a little magic.

…TO MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE
Three lonely people. Three lives at the crossroads. Three people who are about to discover that Christmas is the time of year when anything is possible, and when wishes have a way of finding the path home…

My thoughts: This is not Lisa Kleypas' best work, but it is certainly good and gives hints of a start of a wonderful series. It was a light, short romance read that warms the heart during the holiday season.

One of the things that I love best about Lisa Kleypas is her ability to create such lovable characters and be able to have such great chemistry with the main leads. I greatly enjoy reading about Holly, Maggie, Mark, Sam, and Renfield the dog. I love how they interact with each other and I love how believable they are. I also found myself rooting for Mark and Maggie to fall in love and I really like how they fall for each other over time. For being a short romance, the development between these two characters is carried out really well.

The plot is pretty simple, which is one of the best kinds when it comes to a Christmas read. Though I do wish for more plot development, I am satisfied with what Kleypas offered. I enjoy how the story starts off with a very sad note but ends with a very happy one that makes you say, "Awww!!!!" There's also a slight hint of magical realism in the story, which peaks my curiosity on how it's going to be played out with the rest of the series.

After reading this book, I am highly looking forward to reading the rest of the books. I enjoy the characters and I like the good feeling that the story brought me. I rate this book:

    1. Ay, I shouldn't really say it's not her best work. This book was written very well. Maybe because it was too short for my taste when it comes to Kleypas' books? I know that I'll enjoy the rest of the series.

I really love Dreaming of You. Unfortunately, it is set in England ;)

Btw, I love your made up words. They make sense :)

    3. Gosh, I think all the historical books I read by her are set in England.

You can try her other modern romance, The Travis Series. There's three books. They are not my favorite but they are still good. The three books take place in Texas. The first one is Sugar Daddy, the second one is Smooth Talking Stranger, and the third one is Blue-Eyed Devil.
